Job Posting Organization:

VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) is an international development charity that works through volunteers to create lasting change in the lives of the poorest communities. The organization operates in over 20 countries, engaging thousands of volunteers and local partners to deliver impactful programs. The Policy and Advocacy Volunteer will play a crucial role in fostering collaboration between local Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Civil Society Groups (CSGs) with the national government and other stakeholders. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about social accountability and advocacy, and who are eager to make a difference in their communities. The volunteer will be expected to engage with various stakeholders, facilitate discussions, and promote policies that enhance the effectiveness of civil society in addressing local issues. The role requires a proactive approach to building relationships and advocating for the needs of the community, ensuring that the voices of marginalized groups are heard and considered in policy-making processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Facilitate coordination and communication between local CSOs and CSGs and the national government.

- Assist in the development and implementation of advocacy strategies that promote social accountability.

- Organize and participate in meetings, workshops, and forums to discuss policy issues and gather input from stakeholders.

- Conduct research and analysis on relevant policy topics to inform advocacy efforts.

- Prepare reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders.

- Support capacity-building initiatives for local organizations to enhance their advocacy skills.

- Monitor and evaluate the impact of advocacy activities and provide feedback for continuous improvement.

- Collaborate with other volunteers and staff to ensure alignment of advocacy efforts with VSO’s mission and values.

Required Qualifications:

- Strong understanding of civil society dynamics and advocacy processes.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

- Strong analytical and research skills to inform policy discussions.

- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work in challenging environments.

- Commitment to VSO’s values and mission, including a passion for social justice and equality.

Educational Background:

A degree in social sciences , international development, public policy, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant experience in advocacy or civil society work may also be considered, even if they do not hold a formal degree in the specified areas.

Previous experience in advocacy, policy analysis, or working with civil society organizations is highly desirable. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to engage with stakeholders and facilitate discussions on policy issues. Experience in volunteer work or community engagement will be an added advantage.

Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within VSO and with international stakeholders. Knowledge of local languages in Mozambique would be beneficial and is considered a plus, as it can enhance communication with local communities and organizations.

Additional Notes:

This is a volunteer position, and while VSO provides an allowance to cover basic living expenses, it is important to note that the compensation may not be sufficient for sending money home. Acco dation will be provided, but it may be basic, reflecting the conditions in some of the poorest communities where VSO operates. The role may require flexibility in working hours and the ability to adapt to various cultural contexts.
